If you are looking to install a new water heater, there are several options out there for you. What you decide to use should be based on your hot water needs and your goals for energy efficiency. All water heaters do their jobs well, but each operates in a different way.

Conventional Water Heaters – These heaters use a conventional tank system, heated by fuel oil, propane, natural gas, or electricity. They hold from 20-80 gallons of water which can then be dispersed across the home. However, conventional water heaters are not very energy efficient, however, because water is held in the tank and maintained at a high temperature ready for your use.
Tankless Water Heaters – These heaters heat your water through an on-demand system. When you turn on your hot water, the heater will then pass water through a heating pipe and heat it at your immediate need. This method saves money on energy bills because the heater isn’t constantly functioning, but it also doesn’t allow for multiple units using hot water. If you are running too many systems using hot water simultaneously, the heater will not be able to keep up with your hot water demands.

Solar Water Heaters – These heaters, as the name suggests, use the energy of the sun to power the heating unit. They often have a steep initial cost, but are effectively free to operate. A major benefit is that they can be used in any climate around the world.
