The good ol’ garbage disposal. We have all been there – having to make the decision to walk to the garbage can and throw out the leftovers, knowing full well the stench will only sit there and get worse. So we succumb to the ease of the garbage disposal, tossing the food down the drain. Boom – out of sight, out of mind. Unfortunately, what seems like the easier decision only results in a larger headache down the road when you have plumbing problems. Here is a list of things we suggest you never put down your drains, and we mean never.
Bones
This one should be a bit of a freebie. The blades in your garbage disposal are not strong enough to cut through thick bones found in meat and poultry.
Celery
When we say celery, we are also including any other foods that are exceptionally high in fiber. Do you know the thin, little stings found in celery that you can never fully chew all the way? Well the same goes for your garbage disposal and those thin fibers can get backed up – clogging your drain.
Coffee Grounds
We have all tossed coffee grounds down the disposal a time or two. However, we should really throw out those grounds or even reuse them. Over time, coffee grounds can build up in your pipes, forcing you to call out a plumber to clean your drain.
Plastic Stickers
You know the little stickers that comes on your produce? Yeah, those little guys. Their sticky properties don’t go away just because you throw them down the disposal. They will only help to clog your sink.
(P.S. Environmentally speaking, the last thing we want is plastic in our water systems.)
